A native South Carolinian, Gavin J. Smith is an outspoken entrepreneur from Lexington, South Carolina where he is a public relations professional, marketing and advertising strategist, and media personality.
Gavin is the President and Founder of the Gavin James Group, under which he operates The Inspyre Group, Vision Ventures Investment Group, and several other entrepreneurial ventures. Gavin also serves as a Senior Advisor and Director of Communications for cybersecurity firm, PC Matic, and he serves in a volunteer capacity as the Director of Public Relations and Spokesperson for the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization.
On May 2, 2023, Gavin made history by winning a Special Election and becoming the youngest and first openly gay member to serve on Lexington Town Council. Gavin won more than 40% of the vote in a field of four candidates vying for the highly contested seat and he was sworn in as a member of the Lexington Town Council on May 15, 2023.
Prior to joining the private sector, Gavin received a Presidential Appointment at age 24 and went on to serve as Press Secretary for the U.S. Department of Labor and as Deputy Communications Director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Gavin also served on the Presidential Campaign and the 58th Presidential Inaugural Committee for former President Donald J. Trump.
Gavin is a Forbes Communications Council Contributor, a frequent political commentator on various national cable news outlets, and his opinions have been shared in print publications around the globe including in USA Today, CNN Opinion, Fox News Digital, the New York Times, and more. He formerly worked in the Executive Office of Governor Nikki Haley, for South Carolina State Treasurer Curtis Loftis, and for Speaker Newt Gingrich’s 2012 Presidential campaign.
Gavin is a 2010 graduate of White Knoll High School and a 2016 graduate from the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business where he received his Bachelor of Science in Marketing and Management. In 2020, Gavin earned his Master’s of Public Relations and Corporate Communications from Georgetown University.
Gavin lives in Lexington, South Carolina with his husband, Matthew A. Smith, and their two dogs, Braxton and Bentley.
